This chapter depicts Satan, who is also known as the anti-typical scapegoat in Leviticus 16:20–22, being bound for a thousand years, the judgment that will take place in heaven during this Millennium by the children of God, and the ultimate destiny of those who are wicked, which is to be cast into the lake of fire.
According to Leviticus 23:29, the camp separated those deemed sinners who had not accepted the atonement.
It also reveals to us the two resurrections:
The first resurrection of the righteous occurred before the 1000 years.
The second resurrection of the wicked after the 1000 years.
Revelation 20 Verse 1 to 3
1 And I saw an angel come down from heaven, having the key of the bottomless pit and a great chain in his hand.
2 And he laid hold on the dragon, that old serpent, which is the Devil, and Satan, and bound him a thousand years,
3 And cast him into the bottomless pit, and shut him up, and set a seal upon him, that he should deceive the nations no more, till the thousand years should be fulfilled: and after that he must be loosed a little season.
This is an example of a symbolic vision. In other words, the bottomless pit is neither an underground cavern nor a gaping chasm somewhere else in the universe at all. John is providing a description of the prophetic vision that is currently taking place in front of his eyes. This was merely a symbolic method to illustrate the cessation of Satan's operations, but in the vision, he witnessed a tangible pit, where the dragon's activities ceased. The statement "That he should deceive the nations no more" clarifies the reason for his confinement, emphasizing this point clearly (Revelation 20:3).
The context and other scriptures clearly show that Satan's operations will come to an end. These scriptures demonstrate that the earth will be completely depopulated at the time of Christ's second coming. Revelation 19:19–21 states that the arrival of Christ will result in the destruction of those who are evil. Meanwhile, righteous people are "caught up... in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air." (1 Thessalonians 4:17) Paul's phrase indicates that Christ will not establish His earthly kingdom upon His second return. Otherwise, why would He remove the saints from the earth?
John 14:1–3 provides further evidence that Jesus will remove the saints from earth at the time of His return. In order to ease the pain that His disciples were experiencing as a result of His departure, Jesus shared with them the news that He was going to His Father's house, where He would prepare houses for them. Following that, He would come back and bring them to be with Him. Contrast John 13:36 with John 17:24. Without a doubt, the homes are in the New Jerusalem, which Revelation 21:1–3 states will not relocate to this planet until the end of the millennium.
This is not a literal chain in the traditional sense, as Jude 6 explains to us. Satan possesses a spiritual nature. Mark 5:1-4 asserts that a chain cannot literally restrain either Satan or his demonic angels. On the contrary, a series of events constrain Satan. Without any form, the world is like a bottomless pit. It is a dismal and derelict place. Each and every inhabitant has met their end. For a thousand years, those who are righteous will be in paradise, sitting with Christ. Because there is no one for Satan to deceive, he is unable to escape this dark and desolate pit.
Revelation 20 Verse 4 to 6
4 And I saw thrones, and they sat upon them, and judgment was given unto them: and I saw the souls of them that were beheaded for the witness of Jesus, and for the word of God, and which had not worshipped the beast, neither his image, neither had received his mark upon their foreheads, or in their hands; and they lived and reigned with Christ a thousand years.
5 But the rest of the dead lived not again until the thousand years were finished. This is the first resurrection.
6 Blessed and holy is he that hath part in the first resurrection: on such the second death hath no power, but they shall be priests of God and of Christ, and shall reign with him a thousand years.
It is the representation of power to rule as a king (Revelation 13:2) or a judge (Matthew 19:28).
The choice has been made, so this judgment is not about salvation or damnation. This judgment is important because it has to do with God. As soon as the saved get to heaven, people will start asking about their loved ones.
1 Thessalonians 4:16 - “For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first. Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord.”
This is the death that awaits the wicked following their resurrection at the end of the 1000 years. (verse 14, Revelation 21:8).
The first death happens to everyone (1 Corinthians 15:22, Hebrews 9:27).
According to John 5:28–29, both the righteous and the wicked rise from the grave.
The righteous rise from their graves immortal (1 Corinthians 15:52–55).
The wicked will rise to face their punishment and die an eternal death. (Revelation 20:9, 21:8). God destroys them both physically and spiritually (Matthew 10:28). This signifies annihilation. The "second death" is the polar opposite of an eternal life of pain, which some believe will be the fate of the wicked. (Matthew 25:41).
Revelation 20 Verse 7 to 10
7 And when the thousand years are expired, Satan shall be loosed out of his prison,
8 And shall go out to deceive the nations which are in the four quarters of the earth, Gog, and Magog, to gather them together to battle: the number of whom is as the sand of the sea.
9 And they went up on the breadth of the earth, and compassed the camp of the saints about, and the beloved city: and fire came down from God out of heaven, and devoured them.
10 And the devil that deceived them was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone, where the beast and the false prophet are, and shall be tormented day and night for ever and ever.
The imprisonment was caused by the exile of the righteous to heaven and the demise of the wicked. The losing will be done through the resurrection of the wicked, which will supply Satan with subjects on whom to practice his false deception.
The prison is the "bottomless pit," the desolated world at Christ's second coming, where Satan spent 1000 years. Satan will have the opportunity to gather the resurrected wicked. This will be his last attempt to oppose God before his destruction.
These words refer to the hosts of the lost from all ages who arise in the second resurrection. For a study of the names "Gog" and "Magog," as well as their applicability in Old Testament prophecy and this chapter (Ezekiel 38:1-2).
The New Jerusalem is the beloved city (Revelation 21:10). Some scholars say that the camp is different from the city. The saints are inside the city during the attack. The fact that the "beloved city" has been surrounded makes it clear that it has descended, though Revelation 21:1–10 does not talk about the descent. The coming of Christ, the saints, and the Holy City is a major event after the thousand years.
In this case, the lake of fire is the earth's surface turned into a sea of flames that burns up the wicked and purifies the earth.
2 Peter 3:10 - “But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night; in the which the heavens shall pass away with a great noise, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat, the earth also and the works that are therein shall be burned up.”
Revelation 20 Verse 11 to 15
11 And I saw a great white throne, and him that sat on it, from whose face the earth and the heaven fled away; and there was found no place for them.
12 And I saw the dead, small and great, stand before God; and the books were opened: and another book was opened, which is the book of life: and the dead were judged out of those things which were written in the books, according to their works.
13 And the sea gave up the dead which were in it; and death and hell delivered up the dead which were in them: and they were judged every man according to their works.
14 And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death.
15 And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire.
There are many references to the Book of Life in the Bible. Its pages contain the names of everyone who has ever claimed to follow Christ and asked God for help. The Lord kindly rebuked His disciples when they were bragging about how well their first missionary trip went. He said, "Rejoice because your names are written in heaven" (Luke 10:20). People whose hearts are still with God will have their names recorded in the Lamb's Book of Life.
Death and hell (Hades, the grave) being thrown into the lake of fire means that death and the grave are no longer around. They will never be a part of the new earth. The last enemy to defeat is death (1 Corinthians 15:26, 53–55).
